It is funny how I am meticulous about what goes into my dog's diet but didn't care much about my own diet until recently when my yoga master shared with me the importance of diet and good health. Well, I knew about it all along as I read widely about natural health for dogs and mostly, diet play a very key role in their health. As I am the kind of person who eats what I like and what comes along, I am lucky to be free from illness at the present moment except for acne condition. Today, I am more aware what goes into my diet and actually feel guilty if I had an "oily" dinner or lunch or ate too much. Before, I was never bothered. Well, it's a start at least. I hope to continue taking care of my diet for LIFE!
All the while, I know the powerful benefits of flaxseed oil for my dogs and have put them under regular flaxseed oil supplement since I am aware. This powerful supplements aids in their immune system, skin & coat condition, overall health and immune system. Most of our diets (humans & dogs alike) do not have sufficient daily recommended level of EFA oils (omega 3, 6 & 9). Flaxseed oil supplement have these EFAs and the best part is that all this comes without the fishy smell. Since the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 is approximaetly 4:1, long term taking of flaxseed oil will lead to omega 6 deficiency. Do blend your flaxseed oils with oils higher in omega 6. High omega 6 oils include borage oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil and evening primrose oil.
Flaxseed oil benefits both our pets and our body tremendously. This oil benefits our cardiovasular, immune, circulatory, reproductive, nervous and joint systems. I feel it is an affordable supplement we all should take as most of us usually do not take sufficient omega oil from our regular diet.
Flaxseed oil when taken in dosages recommended for pets with cancer is known to show improvements and some even have their cancer cells shrink gradually. I'm sure it'd help us humans too!
Flaxseed oil is made more effective when 2 tablespoons of the oil are added to 1/4 cup of cottage cheese. The essential fats bind to the proteins in the cottage cheese making them more easily absorbed by your body. Here's a sample recipie to follow for daily consumption.
Here is Dr. Johanna Budwig's Blend:
Put in your blender:
1 cup organic cottage cheese
2-5 Tbsp. of flaxseed oil
1-3 Tbsp. of freshly ground up flaxseed (electric coffee grinder ($15) works fine)
enough water to make it soft
a little Cayenne pepper (red hot chilly pepper)
Care must be taken when choosing flaxseed oil. Buy flaxseed oil in an opaque plastic bottle. This will prevent light from turing it rancid. Check the expiration date as the oil spoils quickly. Keep it refrigerated for freshness. If you find that the oil develop a powerful odor, discard it.
Till we chat again, take your EFAs!!
